'On yer bike!'
Back in July together with the Winslow Wheelers we held our fifth charity bike ride the ‘North Bucks Bike Ride’. Since we started this event it has steadily grown and has become one of the Clubs largest fundraisers and this year raised over £ 8,000. The event was developed with the idea that we make it as inclusive as possible and we organise both leisure rides (20 & 30km) that includes stops at local family friendly attractions and a longer ‘Sportive Rides’ of 60, 100 km and 100 miles, with all the relevant marshals and food / water stations that the riders require.
Over 270 riders participated and included a good number of leisure riders taking in the local attractions (included in their entry fee) and the majority of sportive riders participating in 60km, 100km or 100 mile rides.
Although our club has a large membership of over 40 Lions we were relieved that we were able to share the responsibility of organising and running the event with the 'Wheelers’. Interestingly the Wheelers were initially formed following the interest in our first bike ride in the town. 'What goes around comes around'.
Funds from the event will be allocated to the following organisations:
- Crisis
- Alec's Angels
- Furze Down School
- Henry Allen Trust
- Thomley Trust
Here are some interesting facts and figures on what it takes to put on an event like the Bike Ride..
- 80 volunteers
- 300 direction and promotion signs
- 1500 bottles of water
- 1500 items of food
- 5 sports masseurs
- 4 paramedics
- 3 bicycle technicians
- 4 local visitor attractions
- 270 cyclists
- Up to 160 miles of country lanes
Mix them all up with a huge amount of hard work and team work across several months and remove from oven on the day (it was still hot!) …
'Read all about it!'When you are in the Winslow Library reading up on all the latest news from the newspaper have you ever wondered who pays for it? Well here's the 'scoop'... it is the Lions Club of Winslow. For many years the Club has paid for the subscription to allow the library to provide this service to all its attendees. We can guarantee to bring you the news but cannot always say its' 'good news'. |
Welcome Sally! It's always lovely to welcome a new member to the club and after several months of attending meetings and helping out events it was great to finally welcome Sally Telford to the Club. |
