Melvyn Jones Fellowship Award for Jo Anderson

Jo Anderson

Lion Andy Crossey was representing our Club when he presented a Melvyn Jones Fellowship Award to Jo Anderson.

Lions Club International was formed by Melvin Jones in 1917, and upon his passing, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award was created to recognise humanitarian activity globally, and the Lions Club of Winslow has been delighted to nominate deserving people within our community.

A key element of humanitarian activity is feeding the hungry which is where we come to the St. Laurence Food Cupboard. Some have also called it the St.Laurence Food Bank or the Winslow Food Bank - what it's called doesn't matter, the important thing is that it exists.

For this to operate requires two things. First is that there are people who are willing to contribute food and money and in Winslow we have those people, for which there is enormous gratitude. The second thing is someone to lead it, drive it, and organise it - in short, someone to make it happen.

In Winslow, the person that makes it happen is Jo Anderson and Lion Andy was delighted, on behalf of the Lions Club of Winslow, to present her with 'The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award' for her remarkable service to our community.

'Lions on the Street - Part 1'

If you were shopping in Buckingham on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April you couldn't have missed (even if you tried!) some of our Lions (not) can shaking and collecting for this year's Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal.

Marie Curie collection

"Would you give money to these folk?", clearly many did!

Well done all, it turned out to be the best years collection since we started.

Most importantly, thank you Buckingham for your generosity!

'Lions on the Street - Part 2'

Sometimes when you join an organisation you have to put your best foot forward!

Rob Shepprd

Our newest recruit, Lion Rob Sheppard, certainly did when he helped the Winslow ABC erect the flags in the High Street to celebrate St. George's Day.

'Fun & Games down the pub'

Sometimes the simplest of pleasures can be such fun.

Whilst thinking of another social activity for the Lions it was suggested that we hold a pub night at the 'Nags Head' and challenge each other to traditional pub games (not a video screen in sight!). After we all remembered the rules for each of the games it was fine!

Thanks to the Nags Head for hosting us.

Games Night

The Social Committee also met in April to discuss the Social Events for the upcoming Lionistic Year. We have a mix of events and we will look forward to seeing 'Lions Friends' at some of these as well.

Friends of Lions

This has been a new venture for our Club and we are pleased to see that we now have a list of over 40 'Friends' that are happy to assist us at our events and join us at some of our social events.

How do I become a 'Friend of Lions'? Simply send us an email stating you would like to be included and we will add you to the list.
