Jubilee Woods

840 Trees for Winslow!!

That is the number of trees that have been donated to Winslow thanks to our efforts for applying for a grant from the Woodland Trust..

Lions International is the international umbrella under which the Lions Club of Winslow sits. It has launched a worldwide  request to ask all  Lions Clubs  to plant a tree for each member worldwide. The Lions Club of Winslow has undertaken some research in to this and by chance has  established that the Woodland Trust is giving away trees for Community based projects to celebrate this year’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

After a meeting with the Amenities Committee of the Winslow Town Council  we agreed to try to secure trees for the inside perimeter of the cricket field on Elmfields Gate and the new Burial Ground on Furze Lane which has yet to be landscaped. There are also two other potential projects; one is to  plant trees around Winslow which is in an abandoned Bucks County Council plan due to funding shortages and the other is to build a Remembrance Garden in the Churchyard. They will be considered at a later date.

The Town Council agreed that we should go ahead with a bid for the trees for the two projects. The bids had to demonstrate a benefit to the Community and the involvement of Community Groups in the planting. The Lions submitted the bid for the Burial Ground and the Sports Club for the perimeter of the Cricket Ground. Bids were submitted for 420 trees for each project. We were successful with both bids and we expect the 840 trees to be delivered very soon for planting in early February. The planting will need to involve many of the other Community Groups in Winslow which will be the task of the Winslow Lions Club.We will need to secure publicity and commemorate the trees to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

It is over 20 years since the Lions of Winslow did the tree planting scheme on Elmfields Gate by the Park and the Public Hall Car Park. The result has greatlt improved a blighted area to the benefit of the whole Community. These two projects will do the same. Furthermore the Lions of Winslow will certainly  exceeded their target of one tree per member given that there are just over 40 members.

Congratulations to Lions Gordon Wiseman and Dave Garlick for getting us this far.”
