fragmenting families living in degrading slums, and isolated from

victims of poverty, environmental collapse, wars, parental death,
AIDS, illness, abandonment or domestic violence. While children in
perilous environments with minimal or no adult support have been
documented both in the industrial and developing worlds for
centuries the rapid urban growth from the 1950s has caused an
unprecedented number of children to spend most of their childhood in
stressed and vulnerable circumstances. |
